Multistep Synthesis Exam Review

Plan reagents backward from a target and evaluate the route in the forward direction.

Step-by-step teachingPractice + explanationsPrintable review

1. Understand the Concept

Retrosynthesis identifies a useful reaction type by the bond changes required. The forward plan must then obey mechanism constraints, chemoselectivity, compatible reagents, and reasonable workup.

Your goal: Plan reagents backward from a target and evaluate the route in the forward direction.

2. Step-by-Step Exam Strategy

1. Compare target with starting material

Identify which atoms and bonds change, including oxidation level and stereochemistry.

2. Disconnect strategically

Choose a reaction family that can form the needed bond or functional group.

3. Select conditions

Use compatible reagents, solvent, and workup; consider E2 versus SN2, chemoselectivity and overreaction.

4. Verify the forward path

Draw structures after every step and check for unintended regio- or stereoisomers.

3. Visual Reference

4. Worked Example

Apply the method

2-butyne → cis-2-butene

Use H₂ with Lindlar catalyst for partial syn reduction; Na/NH₃(l) would give predominantly trans-2-butene, and unrestricted H₂/Pd would reduce to butane.

5. Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring conditions that over-reduce a multiple bond.
  • Choosing a reagent that cannot reach the carbon because of steric hindrance.
  • Skipping intermediate structures and assuming the target formed.
